Grumpy in Wheelville

I have oft been accused by people -- mostly those people who barely read the blog -- of being totally negative and down on this country. While I may be quite down on this country, it is with good reason, and frankly I believe there is something to be said for airing the negative perspective. And now, my belief has been backed up with cold hard science.

((via BBC News) Feeling grumpy is "good for you"

Professor Forgas said: "Whereas positive mood seems to promote creativity, flexibility, co-operation and reliance on mental shortcuts, negative moods trigger more attentive, careful thinking, paying greater attention to the external world."

The study also found that sad people were better at stating their case through written arguments, which Forgas said showed that a "mildly negative mood may actually promote a more concrete, accommodative and ultimately more successful communication style".

How funny. I love your argument. Thank you for the unexpected but totally welcome opportunity to smile.

Most of the time in my writing I am grumpy too, and that makes me write more clearly!

Nice blog about Slovenia. It's interesting that you look to Germany for where Slovenia would be in the future.

Hi Utopia, Thanks for the writing. Well Germany's social politics leave a lot to be desired but it is doing well in terms of a fairly developed economy and AMENITIES,but then again it may just be due to its size, something that Slovenia will never have....While all in all I think that Europe is becoming yesterday's news, I think Germany at its best has a lot of the good that this continent has to offer, from the little grabs of what I've seen of it so far. Then again, I am open to being totally wrong..

I wonder, what do you really want or expect to happen with this country? You want a change according to your wishes and opinions what's right and not? Have you ever reflected upon yourself and asked what are Slovenians doing right and what are you doing wrong? Your blog or comments do sound a bit condescending sometimes, but please, don't think I want to offend you. I'm really bluntly asking what I've been wondering for a while now. I follow your blog, but seldom comment. I like you. I like many things you write. But when it comes to the questions posted above, I'm clueless. I understand, if people have a phase in their life, where things don't look good. But at one point, things need to change. Being grumpy is not a good thing, even if science says you can write better arguments, pay greater attention to the external world. And I'm not saying that we should pretend to be happy and deny all the problems. But Camille, how about some joy in your life? Is it really that bad? Sure, I've no idea what you're doing in private, but judging from your blog, you spend a lot of time analyzing and being critical of the smallest things. I don't want to judge a person solely by their blog, but you titled the post "Grumpy in Wheelville" and that indicates that it is part of you.

Now are the best times to have some fun. Seen the world cup? People are celebrating, relaxing, enjoying a great time, especially South Africans. Their joy is contagious. Maybe you're not a soccer fan, I don't know, but you could get interested now and join the public viewings or private parties around Slovenia. You must see how crazy people are these days. And soon will be vacation time. I really hope you can get rid of some of your grumpiness, it'll look good on you, believe me ;)

Cheers!

A Croat in Slovenia

@Croat - Thanks for reading. It's very strange that when I do say positive things about Slovenia (something I, unwittingly, do very often), no one seems to comment or care very much. But when I complain the whole world complains at me. Maybe if I got more positive feedback from the positive things I'd be more inclined to say, do, feel, and share them...
