Being Back

I'm slowly getting used to being back in the wilderness.
We had some friends visit this weekend. It made me re-appreciate the place.

Running Up That Hill

The other day I thought I was just gonna go on a short walk, maybe around Lake Bled, with The Captain but he decided we'd do a proper hike. I was wearing unlined rubber boots and a dress, I really don't know what he was thinking...anyway, I ended up hiking up a steep incline in my inappropriate gear. I am never going walking with that dude again.

Ow-eee!!

Your friendly black by the Balkans is in pain today. As soon as the rain finally stopped and the sun pushed forward from the clouds, The Captain yanked me up and told me we were going to Pokljuka. Uf! I mean, he was right, it was a beautiful day, but while I appreciate fitness and the outdoors, I usually don't like to combine them the way The Cap does. Nonetheless, he insisted and so we went.

I was OK yesterday -- despite the fact that my hand-me-down hiking boots (which The Cap had "repaired") completely came apart (see pic below) -- but today, I am hobbling around like an orthopedics patient. Ouch!

The Champions

Yesterday we trekked over to Kranjska Gora for the Vitranc World Cup. I'd hoped to go on Saturday to see Magnifico, but the Captain couldn't make it. Anyway, this marked the first time I've ever seen anyone ski. I mean I've seen skiing on television but never in person. It was pretty exciting, though watching one of the contestants wipe-out made me pretty content not to try it myself. Though I've been informed that if I want to keep my spot in this family I will indeed have to ski. I am going to resist as best I can, but if the going gets tough, I will park myself on a kiddie slope.

After Kranjska Gora and a bit of light hiking, etc., we went to this weird gostilna that had fair/decent food....











... and two live bears in a cage! It was really off-putting. I know I eat meat and all, but I still do think that animals should be treated with some dignity while alive. The state of those bears was just pitiful. I don't know if what the "owners" are doing is legal in this country, but if it is then someone should pass some law against it. If it is illegal then they should give those bears their freedom immediately. Yikes!
