Interesting news slightly late off the presses from Slavland North (aka Russia)

Jean Gregoire Sagbo Becomes First Black Politician Elected In Russia
KRISTINA NARIZHNAYA | 07/25/10 09:22 AM | AP

NOVOZAVIDOVO, Russia — People in this Russian town used to stare at Jean Gregoire Sagbo because they had never seen a black man. Now they say they see in him something equally rare — an honest politician.

Sagbo last month became the first black to be elected to office in Russia.

In a country where racism is entrenched and often violent, Sagbo's election as one of Novozavidovo's 10 municipal councilors is a milestone. But among the town's 10,000 people, the 48-year-old from the West African country of Benin is viewed simply as a Russian who cares about his hometown.

Congrats to Mr. Sagbo and Good Luck Brothaman!

Literally love it. Wish him well!

It's kind of funny, Russian racism. If I remember correctly, back in the 70s and 80s when communism was in full swing, the Russkies shared some kind of solidarity with African countries and there were lots of exchange programmes organised. And then communism toppled over and I suppose far-right, Aryan-type sentiment replaced it?

Urm, I dunno. They say the same thing here about Yugoslavia, but the longer I am here, the less I am inclined to believe it. I think the state had its own project and that kept Africans safe enough at universities and such, but I don't think that was a project undertaken by the society at large. I think the societies were (and still are) a bunch of grain-chomping gap-toothed locals who could turn hostile at any moment depending on which way the ideological winds are blowing. That the young people are going Nazi has everything to do with the state project...

looking at this quote without knowing who it refers to makes it interesting, because no matter who you imagine the speaker is talking about it is just dismissive and arrogant, and reads like it is coming from a place of anger. maybe it applies to most societies on the planet? then it becomes less offensive? are you a complete misanthrope? it doesn't seem like it, having a blog would suggest not.

oh well. are you okay over there?
are you sure you can make a comfortable home there? i only check in from time to time, but invariably there is a post that makes me feel like you are fighting the urge to lash out or simply return home.
